320 applicants for 10 jobs at my local Tesco Express store. With such huge competition for even “unskilled” work, how do you stand out from the crowd and even get an interview, let alone a job?
It’s actually not as hard as you think. Many of the applicants are applying because the Job Centre told them to do so. Some applied because “it might be alright as a stop-gap.” A few (maybe the ones who were hired) really wanted the job.
Desire (not desperation) is attractive to an employer. If you can show that you really want that job, you’re in the running. How do you show it? Maybe you visit the store in person to try and speak to the manager…. Maybe you send a covering letter, explaining your strengths and circumstances….. Maybe you take the time to spell-check your application form and fill in EVERY box (not with the words: See CV!)…. There are many different ways to show that you are keen!
Then ensure that in your application and in your interview you follow 3 golden rules:
- Convince them that you will be there when they need you. You won’t let them down. You’re flexible and reliable.
- Persuade them that you’ll do an excellent job. Stacking shelves is an art form to you!
- Show them that you’re a nice person to work with and for customers to be served by. Be polite, friendly, well-presented and confident.
Finally, ask for the job! Just say something at the end like, “Thank you so much for your time, I just want you to know that I would love to join your team. When will I hear whether i’ve been successful?” (BIG SMILE). 😀
