We spend a significant portion of our lives working to earn a living. In my view, it is important to choose a career that not only pays the bills but also provides a sense of fulfilment. Many people hope that they will land their dream job but relying on hope alone to achieve your goal is not enough. If you are serious about landing your dream job, you need a solid plan of action.
Here are four strategies that most people use along with one alternative approach that does not rely on hope alone. Let’s get real about what it takes to make your dreams a reality.
You could:
- Enlist the services of a recruitment agency and hope that they will match your skills and experience with suitable employment opportunities.
- Send out the same version of your CV to 500 companies and hope one of them will offer you your dream job.
- Spend hours scrolling through various job websites and hope the perfect job opportunity is advertised.
- Hope your family and friends might lead you to your ideal job.
The real way to land your dream job
To enhance your chances of landing your dream job, being proactive in your search is crucial.
Be Proactive and Tailor your Applications!
To start with, identify your career goals and research potential employers. Take note of the hiring managers’ names and tailor your CV, Cover Letter, and/or Application Form to highlight your relevant skills and experience.
Deliver your application in person if possible. Make a great first impression by introducing yourself and expressing your interest in the company.
Be personable and polite and ask if there is an opportunity to discuss the position further. If there is, smile and ask for an interview. Remember to maintain a positive attitude and show enthusiasm for the job.
While there are no guarantees, it is always worth taking a chance. Worst case scenario? You get a “Thanks but no thanks.” But hey, most people are decent and kind-hearted. They’ll appreciate your determination and who knows? They might even remember you for it!
So go ahead and give it a shot – you never know what opportunities may come your way!
