Stroud Jobs Fair

The Dream Job Coach will be at Stroud Jobs Fair!

If you are in the area tomorrow, Friday, 16th May, please come along to Stroud Jobs Fair and stop by to say hello.  You’ll be able to find me by looking for this banner:

So, here are my 3 top tips for visiting a jobs fair if you are looking for any job, let alone your dream job!

  1. Dress the part. By this I mean, dress as you would for an interview – you may meet your new employer at the fair and you only get one chance to make a first impression!

  2. Bring plenty of copies of your CV with you. Again, you may get chance to hand it directly to a hiring manager and you’ll look a bit daft if you don’t have it to hand. Also, I’ll be on hand to give it the once over and offer you some feedback.

  3. Practise your pitch! When you visit the stands and get the opportunity to talk to potential employers, one way to stand out from the crowd is to have something more interesting to say than “I’m just looking…” or “I’m just seeing what’s about…”

Something along the lines of: “I’m graduating this year in XXX and I’m very interested to hear about your company.”

Or, “I’m considering a career change and wondered if you could tell me a little about your business?”

Or, “I’m a XXXX and I’m looking to progress my career. Could you tell me a little about your industry?”

Or, if you identify a company that you would love to work with: “I’m very interested in working in this industry and I am impressed by your company in particular. What do you like about working there?”

Do you notice how these lines invite the prospective employers to tell you about them? Absolutely what they are at a jobs fair to do, so they’ll be happy to oblige and actually, you are now interviewing them! Nice to be on that side of the fence when you’re job seeking, isn’t it? By taking this pro-active approach and showing an interest, you will create a good impression and you will get far more out of the fair than if you just mooch about picking up leaflets.

I hope this has been useful for you because whether or not you can be at Stroud Jobs Fair on Friday, I’m sure you’ll find yourself at this kind of event at some stage!
