You’ve had good years and not so good years. Let’s make 2020 your best year yet!
What would it take to make 2020 your best year yet? Taking a moment to visualise what you do want rather than focusing on what you don’t want is the first step towards achieving it.
Maybe you want more time with your family and friends? More money to do the things outside of work that you really enjoy? Maybe it’s the work itself that’s getting you down. That feeling of same s**t, different day!
What is the real cause of your dissatisfaction?
When I was working full time, I remember feeling I didn’t have the brain space to even think about what I might do if I wasn’t working full-time (and some!) in a job that had somehow lost its shine over the years. I did know that I was fed up of driving the same stretch of motorway, every day, to work in the same concrete box, with the same people, talking about the same old stuff!
I needed a change in routine. I needed to meet different people who did different things and worked in different ways. I wanted some time for ME! I’d worked damn hard for all these years and I’d bought a beautiful house, filled it with lovely things and yet I felt like I never saw it.
My desires back then were pretty simple. I wanted to be able to live my life at a different pace, to choose what I did and when I did it and to work with people I liked and admired. Guess what? 6 years on, I have created exactly what I visualised and more!
What is it that you really, really want?
Sometimes it’s easier to think about what you don’t want first. That’s why in my eBook: “Your Dream Job – How to find it and get hired to do it!” I’ve included a great exercise called the Career Wheel which helps you to see exactly which areas are less satisfactory for you than others.
Once you know what’s really getting you down (rather than just having a general feeling of fed-upness) you can begin to visualise the opposite situation.
Would A new manager help make 2020 your best year yet?
For example, let’s say you find that you are only 3/10 satisfied with your current manager because they have a tendency to micro-manage you. I would ask you to describe what would need to happen for you to feel 10/10 satisfied. You might then be able to visualise a manger who recognises your ability and expertise. Someone who respects you enough to allow you to manage your own workload. Maybe they would offer flexible working and have the attitude that as long as you deliver the results, they don’t mind when you do the work.
How about being your own boss? – would that make 2020 your best year yet?
Would you only be 10/10 satisfied with ‘management’ if you didn’t have a manager at all? Plenty of people are deciding that their dream job is not to have a job – they want to be their own boss. Is that your dream? Is that what it would take to make 2020 your best year yet?
Don’t worry if you don’t know what your dream business would be. We can work on getting clear about that and then move on to the practicalities of making it happen.
